Transport, shipping and logistics – what’s the difference?

Transport, shipping, logistics – these three words usually appear together in a sentence, describing one of the most important elements of a country’s economy. In common understanding, it is a comprehensive service for the transport of goods. However, each of the words hiding behind the TSL acronym is responsible for a completely different part of supply chain organization.

Transport – the moving of goods from the pickup point to the agreed destination. We distinguish mainly land, air and sea transport.

Shipping/forwarding – the main purpose of forwarding is to organize transport. The freight forwarder accepts orders for the transport of goods, signs contracts with customers, prepares the required documents, organizes the appropriate means of transport, and finally sends the shipment.

Logistics – all activities aimed at setting in place a systematic and consistent supply chain management process. Put simply, a logistics specialist is concerned with the planning of the transport process in a way that ensures smooth functioning of all elements involved in organizing transportation.

Freight forwarding is a more specialized part of logistics. The forwarder is directly involved in organizing the shipment – he makes sure that it is delivered to the customer or to the next storage location. The logistician, on the other hand, deals with the planning and optimization of cargo routes. Transport is the narrowest of these concepts. It encompasses the very delivery of goods from point A to point B.

At MAKO TSL, we mainly deal with forwarding and international transport, predominantly in the region of Western Europe. Working with logisticians from both small and large companies, we know how important it is to deliver goods on time. Thanks to a fleet of over 850 contract vehicles, we are able to handle even the most expeditious orders.
